September 18, 2024, MADISON, FLORIDA – Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), a national animal protection nonprofit, assisted the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Animal Services Division in the rescue of over 140 dogs (including puppies), mostly rat terriers, chihuahuas, and mixes from cruel conditions in and around a home in Madison County where a backyard breeding mill/hoarder had been selling dogs over the internet. Additionally, one kitten only days old was found alive nursing on a dog along with a litter of puppies. The property owner was arrested without incident and taken to Madison County Jail and booked on 142 counts of Cruelty to Animals/Neglect Serious Injury or Death. All of the animals have been legally surrendered to Animal Rescue Corps. The dogs show many obvious signs of neglect common in hoarding and neglectful breeding mills, including internal and external parasites, eye infections, ear infections, skin infections, mammary infections, hernias, dehydration, anemia, severe dental, overgrown nails, untreated injuries, pregnancy, partial traumatic amputation, heart failure, and diarrhea. One dead puppy and one dead kitten were also found on the property and removed as evidence. “Addressing animal cruelty is a responsibility we take with the utmost seriousness, recognizing that animals are victims too,” said Madison County Sheriff David Harper. “We are thankful to Animal Rescue Corps for providing the crucial resources necessary to ensure the safety of these animals and to support our community in protecting animals.” "Operation Harvest Moon underscores the importance of collaboration between local authorities and national animal protection organizations like Animal Rescue Corps whenever large-scale situations of animal suffering come to light," said Tim Woodward, Executive Director of Animal Rescue Corps. The dogs and the kitten were transported to ARC’s Rescue Center, about 30 minutes east of Nashville, Tenn. Each animal in this rescue operation, dubbed Operation Harvest Moon, will receive a thorough veterinary exam, appropriate vaccinations, and necessary medical treatments before being matched and transported to trusted shelter and rescue partner organizations that will ultimately adopt them into loving homes. May 16, 2024, West Tenn. - Animal Rescue Corps (ARC) assisted two separate law enforcement agencies that asked to remain unnamed until their investigations are completed, in the rescue of 52 animals (30 dogs and 22 cats) from two unrelated properties after the animals were discovered living in deplorable conditions. Starting early Thursday morning, ARC arrived at the first of two properties where 17 dogs, including dachshunds, shih tzus, and doodle/poodle mixes used for breeding, were found living in small and filthy wire cages, in plastic travel crates, and inside a small shed. No food or water was present in any of the cages. Many of the dogs were suffering from various medical conditions including high ammonia exposure, severe matting, overgrown nails skin inflammation and infections, ear and eye infections, and internal and external parasites resulting in flea anemia and dermatitis. Some were underweight and some were suffering from untreated dental disease. "Our team faced two heart-wrenching scenes of animal suffering and neglect,” said ARC Executive Director, Tim Woodward. “These back-to-back cases of backyard breeding and hoarding each underscore a dire need for immediate intervention and compassion. Each animal we've rescued is a testament to resilience in the face of extreme adversity." On the second West Tennessee property, 13 large dogs and 22 cats were found living in the shell of a trailer held together with scrap wood and broken pallets and filled nearly to the ceiling in some rooms with trash, and feces. Dogs were also found chained outdoors, one was confined in a rusty makeshift pen, and several were running loose on the trash-strewn property. Uninsulated live electrical wires, broken glass, and sharp rusty metal were scattered amongst the heaps of trash. The flea- and tick-covered dogs are suffering from numerous health issues related to animal neglect, including internal and external parasites, overgrown nails, skin infections, eye infections, and all were extremely dirty. The cats were confined inside the trailer. Most were wearing tight hand-crafted harnesses that had embedded into the skin on their backs and caused deep skin infections — the harnesses needed to be cut off the cats. Others, including kittens just a few weeks old, were trapped in plastic carriers inside the trailer. All of the adult cats suffered from tapeworms, fleas, and ear infections, and two of the cats were diagnosed with the worst case of feline eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC), an allergy-related skin condition which causes rodent ulcers on the upper lip, that ARC veterinarians have ever seen. ARC transported all the dogs and cats from Thursday’s rescues, dubbed Operation Double Trouble, to ARC’s Rescue Center in Gallatin, Tenn., about 30 minutes east of Nashville. Each animal is receiving medical, physical, and social care, including a thorough veterinary exam, appropriate vaccinations, and necessary medical treatments. Once ARC completes all the documentation and necessary medical treatments, each animal will be matched and transported to trusted shelter and rescue partner organizations that will ultimately adopt them into loving homes. ............. Daisy was one of 44 surviving dogs rescued on January 14, 2024, by Animal Rescue Corps in Operation Frozen Sorrows. The dogs of Operation Frozen Sorrows suffered at the hands of a purported rescue in Casey County, KY, that was named Everything's Going to be Alright and operated by Annette Lipa. Many of the dogs were emaciated and suffering from serious health conditions associated with severe and chronic neglect. They endured cold, hunger, thirst, filth, confinement, and lack of care. Daisy, suffering from necrotic tissue in her front paws, was so injured and weak she couldn't stand up. ARC's medical, caregiving, and socialization teams worked to help Daisy and the others regain their strength, joy, and health... and to set them up for success in each finding the loving home each of them always deserved. "If only people who are buying these dogs could look around and see what this is like." February, 2024: The dogs and puppies, mostly miniature schnauzers and schnauzer mixes, were removed from deplorable conditions in an alleged puppy mill by Animal Rescue Corps in collaboration with the Chatham County Sheriff's Office and BISSELL Pet Foundation, with support from Nashville Humane Society. Two defendants have been arrested and charged with multiple charges of animal cruelty. The remains of multiple dead dogs were found on site, including three in a burn pile and one in a trash can. The surviving dogs, including newborn puppies, endured prolonged exposure to high levels of ammonia, resulting in dehydration, malnutrition, parasites, untreated injuries and illnesses, severe matting, skin conditions, and other life-threatening medical conditions consistent with chronic neglect. A large number of the dogs are suffering from coccidia and many from pseudocoprostasis, a life-threatening condition preventing normal defecation. Numerous dogs are pregnant, adding to the population in ARC’s care. In partnership with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Animal Rescue Corps extracted and transported the dogs into ARC’s care, where they are receiving specialized and daily medical, physical, and social care. “Every rescued dog from a puppy mill represents a triumph against cruelty,” said Tim Woodward, Executive Director of Animal Rescue Corps. “We work to shed light on the dark reality of puppy mills and emphasize the transformative power of adoption in providing these animals with the love and care they deserve." ............. January 24-25, 2024 – In an operation dubbed Operation Out of the Box, Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), a national animal protection nonprofit organization, rescued 46 Chihuahuas from a closing commercial breeder in Missouri. These dogs, formerly part of a profit-driven breeding operation, are now under the care of ARC at their Rescue Center near Nashville. When the ARC field team arrived at the breeding operation, the property was strewn with broken-down cars, rusted farm equipment, and patchwork fences. They saw chihuahuas running loose in a yard scattered with corrugated tin hutches that were “home” to many of these dogs, surrounded by electrical cords dangling from fences and bushes. Inside the wasp- and spider-infested hutches were small, shivering adult dogs and puppies huddled in the corners. Each hutch had only a single heat lamp for warmth during this record-setting freezing winter. More than two dozen dogs, including litters of puppies, were also running loose in a home on the property. ARC was in Missouri on a different case, assisting multiple groups with a separate multi-agency, large-scale surrender of other discarded puppy mill dogs, when the urgent call came in requesting help for the chihuahuas impacted by the breeder shutdown. ARC immediately initiated a rescue deployment for the chihuahuas, ARC’s third rescue operation across two states in ten days. This rescue operation showcases ARC's commitment to saving animals from neglect and exploitation. The chihuahuas will receive medical, physical, and social care at the ARC Rescue Center before being matched, placed with, and transported to vetted partners in high-adoption regions nationwide. Tim Woodward, ARC's Executive Director, emphasized the importance of choosing adoption over supporting commercial breeding. "Adopting a companion animal is a conscious and compassionate choice against the exploitation seen in commercial breeding. We're thrilled to rescue these 46 chihuahuas, giving them the chance to be treated as valued family members instead of commodities for profit." January 14, 2024: LIBERTY, KY – Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), a national animal protection nonprofit, responded to a request from law enforcement in Casey County, KY, to assist with the rescue of forty-four large dogs in immediate need of rescue after they were found living in deplorable conditions. The rescue operation, aptly named "Operation Frozen Sorrows," unfolded on January 14, approximately two hours Southeast of Louisville at a house doubling as a home and as a self-described “rescue.” The animals and their poor conditions were discovered after the tenant was unexpectedly hospitalized. Casey County has a small animal shelter but in no way could take in forty-four badly neglected animals. ARC was founded to humanely assist animals and communities in situations like this. When rescuers arrived they found forty-four dogs inside and outside the home. Some were confined to crates while others were running loose. Freezing temperatures and high ammonia levels inhibited rescuers' efforts and additional safety equipment was needed to keep rescuers safe. Three deceased dogs were discovered on the property, two of whom were frozen solid. Belgian Malinois, Great Danes, St. Bernards, German Shepherds, pit bulls, border collies, and cattledogs were just a few of the breeds rescued. Many of the dogs exhibit signs of obvious and chronic neglect including eye injuries, fur loss, internal and external parasites, anemia, gastrointestinal issues, bite wounds, and matting. Some of the dogs are emaciated and the majority of the dogs are underweight. The tenant, Annette Lipa. was operating a purported "rescue" out of the home, called "Everything's Going to be Alright Rescue & Rehabilitation," an ironic name given how little was "alright" for the animals. “The alleged rescue operated by the tenant stands as a stark reminder that good intentions must be backed by responsible actions. The suffering of these dogs underscores the ethical responsibility that comes with operating an animal rescue; neglect has no place in the realm of animal rescue and sheltering. This is a very sad situation and a tremendous amount of suffering has ended.,” said ARC Executive Director, Tim Woodward. I’m glad we could assist.” ARC transported all of the dogs to ARC’s Rescue Center in Gallatin, Tenn., about 30 minutes east of Nashville.
